SkillBridge Program for Veterans: Upcoming Events 2024

What Is SkillBridge?

SkillBridge is a training and development program for active duty service members transitioning from military service to take part in training and development opportunities with several different industries and top employers.

The program was developed by the Department of Defense (DoD) to be an avenue to civilian employment for transitioning Active Duty members through the DoD SkillBridge Program. This SkillBridge opportunity provides real-world training and work experience during their final 180 days of service.

Participants in the program continue to receive military compensation and benefits as active-duty service members.

Involvement in the SkillBridge program requires approval from unit commanders, and participants will engage in an individual internship that provides practical experience and potential pathways to full-time employment. Military members should not explore SkillBridge options until approval is authorized.

Who Is Eligible for Skillbridge?

The program was designed for active-duty military members within 180 days of separation from active duty. During the program, these members are eligible for financial support from the DoD. They will still be covered by their military benefits and receive their military compensation.

However, the program has expanded to include Veterans, National Guard, Reserve members, and military spouses. Although they are not financially supported by the DoD, companies and employers may still offer training programs, development opportunities, and employment pathways for Veterans, National Guard, Reserve members, and military spouses. As organizations move towards a flattened structure, one could anticipate a horizontal

What are they looking for from me to communicate in an interview?

One can expect the usual types of questions, but more specifically, preparing for an
interview and performing well in the interview can often be accomplished by utilizing a
specific approach. One common approach is to use the STAR technique. It helps to not
only to prepare, but also to manage the conversation within an interview. The STAR
approach is simply this: describe the Situation you were dealing with at the time;
describe the Task and the objective you needed to accomplish; discuss the Actions you
took to try and reach the objective; and lastly, describe the outcome or Results. This
approach may well lead to additional clarifying questions, but it is a well-structured
approach to interviewing.

Tips and tricks to getting into this industry

Networking with those already in the industry is a great approach. You can find those
contacts and possibly early career mentors within an organization where you work and
also through professional organizations such as Institute for Supply Management and
Association for Supply Chain Management and the Transportation and Logistics
Professionals Association and local chapters for each.

What can I do while still in the service to prepare for this industry once I get out?

Completing a supply chain management degree is a great starting point. Additionally,
finding supply chain/logistics work experience in that process would help to strengthen
the potential for entry into the discipline. Lastly, finding networks of support to help
guide and open doors when needed.

What is the work-life balance like in this industry?

Organizations in many cases are becoming more engaged on work-life balance needs of
their employees. This may be more challenging in smaller organizations at times when
employees are called on to wear many different types of hats for responsibility, but in
larger organizations there could be more resources to help level out the load for
employees. However, regardless of the discipline, the basic challenge of raising the bar
of expectations for organizations continues to remain strong.

Concorde Career College is a two-year private university offering associate’s degrees and certificates. They operate 17 different campuses across eight states, as well as online. They are called the Concorde Career College or the Concorde Career Institute. They focus on training America’s next generation of healthcare and dental professionals. 

Concorde Career College uses a blended education model which combines lab classes and clinical experiences. They are accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC) and the Council on Occupational Education (COE). They offer over 20 programs in as few as eight months.

The RN-BSN, Dental Hygiene, Healthcare Administration, and Surgical Technology programs are 100% online, however, all other programs use the blended education program and you would need to live near one of the schools to be able to attend the labs that are required.

San Diego, CA offers dental assistant, dental hygiene, medical assistant, nursing, and more. San Diego’s cost of living is much higher than the national average. San Diego is also close to many military installations which could factor into staying in the area to go to school. 

Jacksonville, FL offers nursing, dental assistant, medical office administration, physical therapist assistant, surgical technology, sonography, and more. Jacksonville’s cost of living is slightly lower than the national average making it an affordable place to live.  

San Antonio, TX offers dental assistant, dental hygiene, medical assistant, physical therapist assistant, surgical technology, and cardiovascular sonography. San Antonio’s cost of living is lower than the national average making it an affordable place to live.  

The median rent for an apartment differs greatly depending on where you live. In San Diego, the median rent is $2,916, in Jacksonville, $1,530, and in San Antonio, $1,281. As you can see, San Antonio would be more affordable while San Diego could be more difficult to find a place to rent for those receiving GI Bill BAH benefits.

  1. Practical/Vocational Nursing Diploma 
    • This degree can be earned in as few as 13 months. Those in the program will learn how to provide basic medical care and work under the direction of doctors and other healthcare professionals. 
  2. Dental Assistant Program 
    • This degree can be earned in eight months or up to 18 months for an associate degree. Students would learn how to welcome clients, maintain the back office, or assist a dentist in procedures. 
  3. Physical Therapist Assistant Associate Degree Program 
    • This program takes 20 months. Students would learn how to work with a physical therapist to help patients recover from injuries and illnesses, help them regain mobility, as well as help them manage pain.
