SpouseWorks Fellowship for Military Spouses

The SpouseWorks Fellowship is a Department of Defense program designed to help military spouses grow their careers despite frequent relocations and other aspects of military life that can get in the way. It replaces the Military Spouse Career Accelerator program.

SpouseWorks Fellowship for Military Spouses

Managed by Military OneSource, this initiative matches eligible military spouses with host employers for 12 weeks of paid, full-time professional experience.

This is a new version of a program formerly known as the Career Accelerator. The original program underwent a formal rebranding to integrate career, educational, and fellowship support under a single system. The primary goal is to establish a direct pathway to permanent, long-term employment by pairing immediate workplace immersion with dedicated mentorship. But what is the motivation for the program?

Military spouses face employment hurdles due to frequent relocations, geographic isolation from job opportunities, and gaps in their resumes, all due to the transition required by military relocations like PCS moves, retirement, or separation, etc.

SpouseWorks Fellowship Eligibility

Spouses of service members in the United States Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Space Force may apply. This access extends to all service options, including active-duty personnel, the National Guard, and the Reserve.

The operational footprint of the initiative is global. You can apply whether residing within the continental United States or at an overseas duty station. Where/if a candidate is placed depends on:

  • The formal education level achieved by the applicant.
  • The spouse documents the specific professional background and previous work history.
  • The real-time personnel needs of the participating host employers.

SpouseWorks integrates professional development with practical on-the-job training. Every participant receives individualized guidance from a professional career coach who assists in mapping out a personalized development path, provides feedback, and helps navigate the cultural transition to the host company.

SpouseWorks Fellowship Application

Users log in to the SpouseWorks digital portal to build a professional profile that includes their credentials, target industries, and availability. The platform features an integrated resume builder, access to industry-standard career assessments, and options to request automated resume critiques or mock interviews.

After starting the program, if there is professional growth and performance over the 12 weeks, they can interview for permanent openings within the host company. The program does not guarantee final employment, but the structure positions the participant to compete for open positions.
